A dig into the Belgian presence in India since the 18th century, this book aims at entertaining and arousing the curiosity and interest of the reader by presenting a true story of Belgian splendour and commitment in India. It brings to life among others the achievements of the Ostend East-India Company, the infl uence of Belgian glass and Flemish Painters in the Indian sub-continent. It also acquaints the reader with Belgian personalities whose enthusiasm and dedication should always be remembered.

Philippe Falisse is an MA in Philosophy. In 1967, he left Belgium for India where he studied the Bengali language and literature. He did also a Senior Diploma in Music from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, and, married to a Bengali singer, learned the style of Dhrupad – Hindustani vocal classical music- for more than twenty years. He worked at the Embassy of Belgium in New Delhi as cultural attaché for thirty years. In Belgium, he has also been honoured with the titles of “Knight of the Crown Order” and “Officer of the Crown Order”.
